Tomorrow would mark the sixtieth anniversary of the day my family crossed the border to enter into paradise. Leaving behind their broken dreams and hopes inside the crumbling walls, these brave pioneers set out on a course that may one day give their children a happy future.
The sounds of the news were drowned out in the cacophony from the front yard. I watched from the window as my father started dissembling the truck he had been building as a surprise for his erstwhile loving neighbor. They had been brothers-in-arms for 60 years…but now he was just an intruder.
I had never seen my father more disillusioned than the day he discovered that paradise was just another piece of land.

Bleak and honest. Well done.

Thank you. I can only presume what is going on in the minds of those who are currently in that situation.

You’re right. It does seem like a scene from the future…a future I hope doesn’t come to pass. Thank you for your kind words.

*Sigh* This piece sits heavy in my chest. It’s an honest reflection with such symbolic decriptions. I’m left feeling pensive. Thanks for sharing this story with us!

This story really touched my heart. First, the story is so topical. Next, it seems to me that many have their dream of paradise broken when we find ourselves in the middle of reality. Wonderful story! Welcome to the FFfAW challenge! We are happy you have joined us. 🙂

Thank you. Surprisingly, the challenge was not writing in the word limit. It was to write a full story with intro, body and conclusion! Good mental exercise. Thank you ☺️

A fine story about disillusionment. as individuals strive to reach paradise.

Thank you for your words. Like one of the readers said home is where the heart is. That’s the defining point for when paradise becomes hell.

I love the last line. It summed up something so real and honest in such a simple way, but poignant all the same.

Not just men’s hearts, I think, but all hearts. Love really can be a fickle thing.

Paradise lies in the heart. This tale brings to fore that material possessions can never quite satisfy.
